SocialMedia: Seth Goldstein IAB Keynote: ‘Social Media’ Is Killing Internet Advertising

  • Kostas · 1 year ago
Are you guys serious? You are attributing the decline in display advertising to social media?
This is madness. Click-through rates for display ads started falling due to the increasingly disruptive nature of the medium and NOT because of people being "interested in each other". People have been 'interested in each other' since the beginning of human kind.

Don't know if you publish my comment but even if you don't please rewrite this so that it makes sense.

The argument is that the structure of websites have changed, making banner ads less effective. Social media sites are about one or many people conversing, which is more engaging than the banner advertisements placed along the top of the site. AOL discovered the same thing with AIM's chat platform. People talk to each other and a paying less attention to the ads.

Display advertising has definitely taken a hit, perhaps partly because of social media.

On the other hand, I'm working on a Facebook app that is seeing a CTR of between 15-30% with double digit conversions.

People aren't using your app/site/product to click on ads (unless you're Thrillist), so find a way to make money from the things they are using it for.
