I kind of feel like it is an invasion of privacy a bit for the end user and it seems to just be one more way we are being tracked online.

Re: Do We Need Google’s Behavioral Targetting Right Now?

Well as we all know advertising is really important for a company to be noticed, Google is the number one most visited site, that's why many company are now using Google for their advertisements.

Re: Do We Need Google’s Behavioral Targetting Right Now?

Goggle is surely going downhill as far their contextual advertising is concerned.

Re: Do We Need Google’s Behavioral Targetting Right Now?

The basis for a good ad is having the right timing and the right message. For this reason alone, google is making a smart move to target their ads. If a consumer visits a Web site that features various housing developments, it is safe to assume that this person is considering the purchase of a home. With this very small and very general piece of knowledge, Google already is able to help this consumer by placing ads such as real estate agent agencies. If the ad has the right message, Google has contributed by helping to provide the right timing. Thus, with targeted ads, everyone is benefiting from consumer to advertiser. Better ads should be a beginning standard. Targeting these ads simply accelerates their effectiveness.

Re: Do We Need Google’s Behavioral Targetting Right Now?

I'm not saying that ads don't need to be targeted, just that advertisers aren't suffering from a lack of targeting. We can already target ads down to users based on gender, location, language, interests...

They're suffering from a lack of experience.

Re: Do We Need Google’s Behavioral Targetting Right Now?

Interesting conversation ... but I disagree with your final analogy ... It is essential that ads are tagetted, and it is essential they are better. Either way the natural economy will sift away the garbage ads. If the ads don't perform the advertisers can continue with them. This is why you said that better ads will win the day.
